What is Urticaria?
Urticaria, also known as Hives, is a kind of skin rash where there is red or flesh coloured raised and itchy bumps or welts. It is usually located in the upper dermis of skin. The appearance of bumps or hives may vary in shape and size from person to person and the hives may change places on the skin and often disappears in few hours. It can affect people of any age group and constitution.
Urticaria has different names in various languages. For example-
- In Hindi it is called as “pittee”
- in Gujarati, it is called as “siras”
Urticaria can be acute or chronic in nature. The difference between two lies in how long the symptoms last.
Acute urticaria usually lasts less than 6 weeks. It comes on suddenly and disappears on its own within a few days or weeks.
Chronic urticaria lasts longer than 6 weeks. It can stay for months or even years. The hives can be recurrent (coming back repeatedly) or persistent (continuing for longer period).
